DROWNING STATISTICS:
▪ Drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death for children under the age of 14, accounting for 859 deaths
in 2001.
▪ 97% of those children who drowned were not wearing a personal flotation device
at the time of drowning.
▪ Children under 4 have the highest
drowning death rate (two to three times
greater than other age groups) and account for 80 percent of home drownings.
▪ In 2002, nearly 2,700 children ages 14
and under were treated in hospital
emergency rooms for unintentional
drowning-related incidents.
▪ Drowning is the greatest summer risk for children ages 14 and under, with deaths increasing 96 percent above average
during the summer months.
